Recently, I've had executive conversations about why transformation is so challenging. This is a topic we particularly familiar with, having discussed it many times before with senior private and public sector stakeholders. Key themes from our discussions below
Transformation involves aligning different organisational messages. CEOs and CFOs question past failed transformations and their impacts on OKRs, revenues and EBITDA. CIOs/CDIOs/CTOs focus on technical debt, digital exploitation, and skills retention. Operational teams are concerned with meeting KPIs amidst high expectations, and customers struggle with broken interactions requiring excessive effort to resolve.
True transformation (business, operating model, technical, organizational) is tough to achieve alone due to interdependencies like future business model demands, resource needs, skills for planning and management, and communication of benefits and risks. Often, trying to change the model while maintaining the existing paradigm with the same team (and bringing the organisation with you) leads to inertia and eroded support.
